IT ALL STARTED WITH NANCY SCHAEFER

In the intricate web of family rights, child welfare, and the judicial system, a name resounds as a beacon of persistent inquiry and reform โ€” Nancy Schaefer. An American political figure and a staunch advocate for family rights, Schaefer’s work has shed light on a systemic issue that seemingly blurs the lines between protecting children and exploiting families. Our investigation, “Custody 4 Cash,” aims to further unravel this complex issue, focusing on alleged abuses in the Luzerne and Wyoming county area court systems.

From 2004 to 2008, as a Georgia state senator, Schaefer fiercely criticized what she believed to be profound corruption and misconduct within the Department of Family and Child Services (DFCS). Her controversial report, “The Corrupt Business of Child Protective Services,” sent shockwaves throughout the child welfare community, alleging that children were being removed from their homes under questionable circumstances and that families were being unnecessarily broken apart for financial gain.

Schaefer’s untimely and tragic death in March 2010, under mysterious circumstances, has only fueled speculation and concern surrounding these allegations. The official conclusion โ€” a murder-suicide committed by her husband, Bruce Schaefer โ€” left more questions than answers, and conspiracy theories abound due to the contentious nature of her work. To some, her death was more than a personal tragedy; it symbolized the silencing of a relentless voice that dared to question the status quo.

Our “Custody 4 Cash” investigation builds on Schaefer’s legacy, delving deep into the judicial systems of Luzerne and Wyoming counties. We seek to reveal whether families in these areas have been victims of similar exploitative practices. In a society where justice should be the backbone, we are committed to uncovering the truth and shining a light on any instances of injustice in our child welfare and court systems.
